## Description

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s. Its roots lie in disco, funk, soul, and early electronic music, particularly the work of DJs like Frankie Knuckles. The genre is characterized by a repetitive 4/4 beat, typically around 118 to 135 beats per minute, a prominent bassline, and often incorporates sampled vocals, drum machine rhythms (particularly the Roland TR-808 and TR-909), and synthesized sounds. Early house tracks often featured looped samples from disco records, manipulated and layered to create new textures and rhythms. 

Culturally, house music emerged from the LGBTQ+ and Black communities in Chicago, providing a space for expression and celebration. The Warehouse club, where Frankie Knuckles was a resident DJ, is considered a foundational location for the genre’s development. The name “house music” is believed to be derived from this club. 

At events, house music is typically presented in a club or festival setting, often with DJs playing extended sets. Subgenres like deep house, tech house, and progressive house have developed over time, each with distinct sonic characteristics. Live performances incorporating vocals or instrumental elements are also common, though the core of the genre remains DJ-driven and focused on creating a continuous, danceable experience.
